Bitumen Engineering

Symbol - Bitumen EngineeringThe mission of Bitumen Engineering is to provide advanced technical, and at the same time economically efficient solutions for modified bitumen producers both in the refinery, paving and roofing industries.

Bitumen Engineering is a technical consulting group consisting of mostly Ph.D. level chemical and civil engineers specialized in bitumen (asphalt in the USA) related technologies and materials. Thus no pavers or construction people, but engineers with 10+ years of experience in hydrocarbon processing and  petrochemistry as well as refinery production.

Our personnel have strong academical background, which supports complete understanding of the latest research findings and technologies. This leads us to offer:
•    enhanced bitumen formulation in order to reduce primarily material but usually production expenses too
•    fulfillment of existing binder standards by using other (normally cheaper) bitumen modifiers
•    creating paving material standards for countries, where they are yet unexisting or construct an improved one by considering other variables (e.g. climate conditions)

We have practical and theoretical expertise in the
•    chemical (e.g. polyphosphoric acid (PPA), malaeic anhydride (MA))
•    elastomer (e.g. styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS))
•    filler (e.g. carbon black)
•    plastomer (e.g. ethylene-vinyl-acetate copolymer (EVA)
•    process (e.g. air blowing)
•    wax (e.g. Sasobit)
bitumen modification areas (or any combination of thereof), and are very familiar with both the conventional (penetration grade) and the latest (superpave), testing methods systems.

Our company is closely connected with equipment manufacturers therefore in case of need we can offer a helping hand in order to obtain a turn key unit and a complete technology transfer.

information_sAlthough usage of terms asphalt and bitumen are interchangeable in the Unites States, in Europe and in the rest of the World asphalt denotes the impure form of generic material, whereas the bitumen, the basic mixture of heavy hydrocarbons free of inorganic impurities.

Technology Transfer

TroubleshootingA complete technology transfer consists of several parts, such as specification development, raw material and process requirements, binder formulation, practical guidelines for installation, economic analysis.

Specification Development

Bitumen additiveMany countries and regions have no specific standards for modified bitumen. Bitumen Engineering can help determine the right properties and numbers in order to minimize testing cost during quality control.

Binder Formulation

DispersionImproved bituminous binder formulation can lead to material and manufacturing cost savings and/or improved material performance. Based on energy, labor etc prices the optimum performance-price option can be determined.
